2009 GMAC Bowl:
Troy vs. Central Michigan
It was Paul Smith and Tarrion Adams who paved the way to victory. The Tulsa team demolished the Bowling Green squad in a score of 63 to 7, clinching the 2008 GMAC Bowl. Quarterback Paul Smith had his fourteenth consecutive 300-yard passing, and this was an NCAA record. These Golden Hurricanes made history by being the first team to boast of a 5,000 yard passer, a rusher (1,000 yards) and a trio of 1,000 yard receivers - all of these in just one season.
Fans who bought their Ohio State tickets, surely went home heartbroken (but hopefully at least enjoyed the action). The Bowling Greens lost 4 first half fumbles, and the other team converted them into touchdown points.
Everybody who bought GMAC Bowl tickets to see Smith do wonders was not disappointed. Their idol finished with 312 yards (passing), not to mention 5 touchdowns. Naturally, he was given the MVP honors, while Adams clinched the Offensive Player of the Game honors.
In this GMAC Bowl battle, Coach Graham proved he has what it takes. Fact is, Graham became just the third coach to push Tulsa to the finals.
The team actualized their very first 10-win run since the early 90s. The Tulsa team humiliated 2 first half threats, when they got back from a fumble inside the ten yard line.
This game may not compare to the 2001 battle between the Marshall Thundering Herd against the East Carolina Pirates, but this game would still be called a “classic” many years from now. After all, people will always remember records getting broken, be it the GMAC Bowl or the NBA.
